Process for preparing aromatic compounds through decarboxylation of aromatic carboxylic acids

Prodn. of an aromatic cpd. of formula (I) comprises decarboxylation of the corresp. benzoic acid of formula (II) in aq. soln. in the presence of an inert amine (III) which is insol. in water at pH 3-9 and a temp. of 70-210 degrees C. The reaction mixt. opt. contains a decarboxylation catalyst (V) and opt. an inert, water-insol. solvent (VI). R1-R5 = H, COOH, F, Cl, Br, CF3, OH, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or NR'R"; R = R4; R6 = R1; R7 = R2; R8 = R3; R9 = R4; or when R1-R5 = H, then R, R6-R9 may also be COOH; R', R" = H, 1-4C alkyl or phenyl.
