It is an object of the present invention to provide a compact single cylinder hermetic refrigeration compressor with improved operating efficiency. The refrigeration compressor has a flat valve plate 33 that extends across the end of the cylinder 24. The outlet 48 is formed in the valve plate having the spherical valve seat 65, and the spherical valve poppet member 68 is provided to be movable with respect to the valve seat. A flat leaf spring 51 and a valve stop member 56 are mounted above the valve poppet to control the movement of the valve poppet. The spherical head 69 of the valve poppet, when closed, engages with the mating recess of the piston and extends beyond the face of the valve plate, minimizing the gap space of the compressor 10. The valve seat and the valve poppet can substantially eliminate the extra gap volume at the outlet and increase the operating efficiency of the compressor.
