The incident primary beam is separated into a modified primary beam and at least one secondary beam. The separated secondary beam is converted into a modelled secondary beam whose convergence and divergence coincide with those of the primary beam. At the same time, the sum of the energy density profiles of the modelled secondary beams is at least approximately complementary to the energy density profile of the primary beam. The modelled secondary beams are coaxially superpositioned on the modified primary beam to produce an output beam. The apparatus includes a beam splitter (9) which separates the incident primary beam into a modified primary beam and at least one secondary beam, and a modelling system (2, 3, 4, 12, 13) which is supplied with the separated beam.
