A device for a two-handed motorised tool, such as a hedge trimmer 11, is used to actuate a power supply and a braking means. The tool has at least one motor, two in this embodiment, 13, 14 which have output shafts 15, 16 which drive the blades 18. Two clearance giving elements 19, 21, such as levers, interact with at least one microswitch 24, 25 to turn the power to the motor(s) 13, 14 on or off. In addition to activating the power supply, pressing the clearance-giving elements also releases the braking means 26, 27. These consist of two movable elements 26, 27 which, when the brakes are applied, contact the flat surfaces 30, 36 to cause the motor to stop turning. To increase the friction the surfaces 30, 36 may be coated with a high-friction material. If either of the two clearance-giving elements are not pressed, the power supply will be cut off due to microswitch 24 or 25 not being actuated, and the brakes will also be applied as one of the movable elements 26, 27 will contact the surface of the motor, 30 or 36. Thus both hands must be used when operating the tool, reducing the risk of injury through touching the blades when it is in action.
