A single sheet process for forming a dye image involves image-wise heating a recording element with a laser. The element has a support carrying a dye layer contg. (i) a polymeric binder in which is dispersed (ii) an image dye which is an aryl-azo phenol, arylazo naphthol or arylazo aniline UV - absorbing dye. The dye layer is associated with an IR-absorbing material. The element is laser exposed on the side carrying the dye layer. The imagewise hating ablates the dye and the ablated material is removed to leave the dye image.
