Claimed is a method for regenerating a deactivated sulphonated aromatic organic polymeric ion-exchange resin with chemically bonded aminoorganomercaptan (AOM) gps. and AOM gps. that have been chemically modified by contact with hydroxyacetone during a phenol-ketone condensation reaction. The method comprises: treating the deactivated ion-exchange resin at 70-120[deg]C. with anhydrous phenol contg. 0-0.10 wt. % water until a phenolic reaction mixt. is formed comprising a mixt. of phenol and a trisphenol reaction prod. produced by contact of the exchange resin and anhydrous phenol. The reaction mixt. contains less than 1 ppm of the phenolic reaction prod. as determined by HPLC.
