A gold plate is deposited on an object, after relaxation heat treatment of initial PVD layers and surface activation, by electroplating with a greater than 23 carat gold plate. A coating is deposited on an object by ion etching, PVD of a transition metal deposit, PVD of a hard material and PVD of a metallic anchoring layer, followed by the novel steps of relaxation heat treatment under a nitrogen/hydrogen atmosphere, activation of the anchoring layer by immersion in an acidic solution and electroplating with a greater than 23 carat gold plate. Preferred Features: The PVD operations are cathodic sputtering operations. The transition metal is pure titanium or zirconium and the anchoring layer is based on gold.
