Azo dyes of the formula [where X is oxygen or a radical of the formula NRSP6/SP, where RSP6/SP is hydrogen or optionally substituted C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy or C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) RSP1/SP is C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy or optionally halogenated C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) or is optionally substituted phenyl, Y is hydrogen, halogen or cyano Z is nitro or additionally cyano when Y is halogen or cyano, RSP2/SP is C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, methoxymethyl or optionally substituted phenyl, RSP3/SP is hydrogen, C 1 -C 4 -alkoxy or C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, and RSP4/SP and RSP5/SP are each C 1 -C 13 -alkyl (optionally interrupted by 1-4 ether groups and optionally substituted by hydroxy, cyano or C 1-4 -alkanoyloxy) or C 2 -C 6 -alkenyl] are useful for dyeing or printing synthetic materials and are synthesizable using novel dinitroaminoaromatics (as diazo components) of formula where X, Y, Z and RSP1/SP are as defined above. Compounds of formulae (IIa) and (IIb), which are defined in claims 11 and 12 respectively and lie within the definition of formula (II) above, are claimed per se.
