PURPOSE:To early and surely detect lowering of liquid level in an electrode chamber which is caused by lack of salt water by projecting light to the window of a transparent body fitted to the external wall of a gasliquid separator communicated with the liquid level of an electrolyte and measuring the reflected quantity of light. CONSTITUTION:A transparent body 5 is fitted to the external wall of a gas- liquid separator 3 communicated with the liquid level of an anolyte 2 of an electrolyzer 1 of alkali chloride. Incident light 8 is projected to the window 4 of the transparent body 5 from a light sensor at an incident angle theta. One part of this light is passed through the transparent body 5 and reflected by the rear 7. When the rear of the transparent body is brought into contact with the anolyte or gas, the difference in the amount of reflected light 9 is caused respectively. Thereby the presence of the anolyte is detected. This difference in the amount of reflected light is sufficiently held without being disturbed even when many bubbles are accompanied in an anode chamber. However it is preferable that the difference is measured for at least one second in order to dertermine accuracy.
