PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the coated optical fiber pair identifier which can accurately identify a coated optical fiber with simple constitution and enables a bidirectional continuous telephone call by using the collated coated optical fiber. ;SOLUTION: An optical transmission and reception unit 201 is connected to one-side ends of two coated optical fibers 202A and 202B, which are looped by connecting the other-side ends to each other; and a local unit 203 is installed nearby the other-side ends. While the local unit excites the coated optical fibers, a light signal is propagated from the side of the optical transmission and reception unit and the optical fiber identification is performed according to whether or not a vibration signal is found in variation in the intensity of interference light between clockwise propagated light and counterclockwise propagate light which have returned. Further, a telephone call is made between the optical transmission and reception unit and local unit through the identified optical fiber.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
