PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compensate by a simple external lens, by a method wherein two slabs are constituted so as to be alternately perpendicular to each other, and the integrated thermal lens is directionally symmetrical. ;SOLUTION: An optical amplifier 20 contains two long-form slabs 22, 24. The long-form slabs 22, 24 are formed with a substantially square or rectangular section having an aspect ratio of approximately 1 which fixes long axes 29, 33 and short axes 31, 35. The long axes 29, 33 are along a zigzag direction. The aspect ratio is defined as a ratio of a width W of the slab to a thickness T of the slab. The long-form slabs 22, 24 contain a pair of confronting end faces 26 and four side faces 28 positioned between the end faces 26, respectively. With such a structure, an angle of incident beams is substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis line of the slab. For this reason, an angle is appropriately selected, so that optical beams 30 incident on the end face 26 of the slabs 22, 24 are fully reflected by substantially zigzag patterns inside the slab.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
