PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a three-phase double-salient pole reluctance motor to be driven at high speed without impairing its characteristics of high-torque, low- speed operation, by conducting only a phase coil in a low-speed operation range, and by conducting two phase coils simultaneously in a high-speed operation range. SOLUTION: A CPU determines a target current values Iu of a U-phase coil CLu, Iw of the W-phase coil CLw, and Iv of the V-phase coil CLv for conducting a single-phase coil in a low-speed operation range, in which the operation speed of a reluctance motor is less than a given speed V1. In an intermediate and high-speed operation range, the target current values Iv, Iw, Iv are determined to energize two phase coils simultaneously. As a result, high torque can be generated in the low-speed operation range. In the intermediate and high-speed operation range, torque constant becomes smaller than that in the low-speed operation range. Because the increase of the reverse electromotive force and the decrease of the conducting current are controlled, it is possible to operate the motor at the intermediate and high speeds.
