PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having excellent mechanical characteristics, adhesive properties and processability and rapid photochromic rate, and useful as an optical recording medium. SOLUTION: This new compound is shown by formula I [R1 is H, a 1-22C alkyl, fluoro or the like; R2 is a (substituted) alkylene; R3 is a direct bond, linking group, O atom or the like; X and Y are each O, N or S; Z is a (substituted) methylene, carbonyl], e.g. 1-(6'-acetyl-2'-methylbenzo[b] thiophen-3'- yl)-2-(2''-methylbenzo[b] thiophen-3''-yl) hexafluorocyclopentene. This new compound is obtained by subjecting a diarylethene of formula II to acetyl chloride reaction to yield a monoacetyl-substituted diarylethene, subjecting the resultant product to hydration to yield a compound of formula IV and reacting the compound of formula IV with methacryl-substituted alkylenealcohol.
