ANTISENSE OLIGONUCLEOTIDE ANTIBIOTICS COMPLEMENTARY TO THE MACROMOLECULAR SYNTHESIS OPERON, METHODS OF TREATING BACTERIAL INFECTIONS AND METHODS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIA

A method of interrupting the expression of amacromolecular synthesis operon in bacteria comprising thestep of binding an antisense oligonucleotide to a singlestranded DNA or to a mRNA transcribed from themacromolecular synthesis operon. The antisenseoligonucleotide can be either sequence specific to aunique intergenic sequence or a sequence specific to abacterial homologous sequence. By interrupting theexpression of the macromolecular synthesis operonbacterial infections can be treated. Specfic antisenseoligonucleotides are disclosed. The ability of theantisense oligonucleotide to bind the mRNA or singlestranded DNA also allows the identification of thebacteria by using a unique intergenic antisenseoligonucleotide to bind to the single stranded DNA or tothe mRNA transcribed from the macromolecular synthesisoperon. A method for competitively inhibiting the proteinproducts of the MMS operon with oligonucleotides is alsodisclosed. Methods of identifying unique intergenicsequence is also disclosed.
