A sea chest cover for providing access to the sea chest ofa ship. The sea chest cover is fabricated essentially entirelyof one or more viscoelastic materials, preferably eitherpolyethylene or polyurethane. Fabrication of the sea chest coverfrom a viscoelastic material reduces or eliminates corrosion anderosion problems. It also minimizes marine organism and icebuild-up. The result is a reduction in the expense associatedwith maintaining such covers. The fabrication of the sea chestcover essentially entirely of viscoelastic materials minimizesthe weight of such components, thereby making handling andmaintenance easier. The sea chest cover is either pre-formed toa shape conforming with the shape of the ship's hull in the areawhere the sea chest is located, or it is sufficiently flexible tobe placed into such conformance. The sea chest cover of thepresent invention may be formed as a unitary piece or as aplurality of removably connectable parts.
