METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ADDING AND REMOVING COMPONENTS OF DATA PROCESSING SYSTEM WITHOUT POWERING DOWN

PURPOSE: A method and system is provided to add or remove components of a data processing system without powering down when repairing or exchanging the components of the device. CONSTITUTION: If a user operates hot-plug operation, an operating system stops or resets an adapter. And then, an interface(350) informs a control/power logic(208) to isolate an adapter line. The interface(350) isolates a slot from a main PCI bus or an isolation bus(204) and makes power of the slot(304) low. The interface(350) informs that the power is removed from the operating system and then removes the adapter. If the user inserts a new adapter in the slot(304). The control/power logic(208) detects the new adapter. According to a power request of the user, the control/power logic(208) makes power of the slot up. The control/power logic(208) starts process of individual control for the bus and request control on the main PCI bus. If the control for the control/power logic(208) is permitted, the control/power logic(208) accesses to the main PCI bus slot and isolates the bus. The control/power logic(208) informs that the hot-plug operation is completed to a host bridge(202) and then enables the slot(304).
