An age hardening process for aluminum vehicle body components comprises heat treating the components before and after assembly together and/or with other components. Age hardening of aluminum components of vehicle bodies or body subassemblies comprises heat treating the individual or joined aluminum components, assembling the aluminum components together and/or with other components optionally of steel and heat treating the resulting vehicle body or body assembly. Preferred Features: The aluminum alloy contains 1.0-1.5 wt. % Si and 0.25-0.60 wt. % Mg and is especially AlMg0.4Si1.2 alloy.
