Reference internal combustion engine for design and property relationship uses releasably joined function groups combined to reveal effect of shape and material changes

When constructing a reference motor, e.g. i.c. engine, the several function groups (2,3,4,5,6,7) are combinable in module fashion to combine different shapes and/or materials of the respective components, the function groups and/or components to be connected releasably and relate to cylinder head (6), piston unit (5), liner unit (4), water jacket (7), crank space (2) and oil sump (3). The shape and material variations are used to try out various characteristics and their response to the changes in material or shape, notably fuel consumption, acoustics, environmental compatibility and/or quality aspects. The respective groups are joined at interfaces served by sealing surfaces, with all components exchangeable for a component of the same group by different shape and/or material.
