A lens blank holder, comprising an elastomeric or polyurethane carrier (6) exhibiting high friction relative to silicate glass or plastic lenses, is new. A holder, for stationary holding of a lens blank (2) between the relatively axially moving holder shaft halves (12, 14) of an edge milling machine, comprises a small diameter prefabricated carrier (6) of elastically deformable elastomer or polyurethane having a high friction relative to highly antireflective lenses of silicate glass or plastic, the carrier (6) having centering and entraining elements (7, 8, 9) at the side opposite the glass blank optical face (3), a seating face (10) at the glass blank optical face side and a coaxial, easily detachable, adhesive foil section (11) or a narrow coaxial adhesive foil ring on the seating face (10). The carrier (6) is pressed axially with elastic deformation against the glass blank optical face (3) by means of a receiver head (13) on the holder shaft (12).
