A negative tool insert of the component is manufactured by a rapid tooling method and mounted in a tool. In the subsequent powder injection molding stage, a powder filled plastic is injection molded in the tool insert to give a preform which is then sintered to remove the plastic binder, stabilize the powdered material and form a positive prototype tool insert. Preferred Features: Molding of the prototype tool may also be effected by compression-injection, transfer or compression molding processes.
