Casting filter has a slightly inclined permeable wall region (8) forming an active melt passage flow cross-section. A trough-shaped, cup-like, tubular or frustoconical casting filter structure, for use in a gate of a metal alloy casting mould, includes a permeable filter wall region (8), which has an inclination of less than 15 deg to the melt entry flow direction (6) and which is positioned to form an active flow cross-section for passage of melt injected through the gate, and a permeable or impermeable wall section arranged perpendicular to the entry flow direction for impingement of the melt. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a casting filter having a meandering geometry of intersecting flat filter wall regions arranged alternately transverse to and parallel to the melt entry flow direction; and (ii) a casting filter having a cup shape with one or more bottom openings which are closed during casting so that the active flow cross-section is formed by the cup wall.
