The method involves controlling the rotation number of a microprocessor-controlled pump drive for a pump or fan of the unit according to an input signal. Control fittings of a pipe system of the unit have a microprocessor-controlled adjustment drive, which is controlled by sensor signals. The microprocessors of the adjustment and pump drives are interchangeably connected together through a data bus. The input signal for the rotation number of the pump drive is determined from an adjustment drive of a microprocessor in a communication state. A pump characteristic of the pump drive determines adjustment signals to operate the adjustment drive.
