The thermoprocessor has a preheater (36) for heating the imaging material (34) to a threshold temp. with a heated element with a larger area facing the imaging material, a dwell region (38) for thermal development of an image on the material, a roller (48,50) transport arrangement for moving the material along a transport path through the preheater and dwell region and an arrangement for reducing optical density loss in the imaging material with an arrangement for selectively varying the temp. of the heated element whilst the material is being transported. An Independent claim is also included for a method of developing an image on a thermal imaging material.
