The machine bed forms a workpiece support with a row of cross slides (7) movable along guide rails which form one unit with the work surface. Tension devices on the cross slides have a bearing surface (8) for the workpiece and side devices (9,10) for holding and clamping the side parts of the workpiece. The side holding and clamping devices have a fixed stop (11 16) and tension device (12, 17) which presses the side part of the workpiece against the fixed stop.
