Sawn timber (8) is dried in a chamber (1) fed by line (12) with fresh air and is there heated before circulating round the chamber via blower (4) so the moisture-laden air can then be drawn off by line (13). The fresh air line (12) issues into the chamber via a guide strip (6) with air outlets on its top and bottom narrow sides and the moist air is led out of the chamber via a strip (7) in channel form with inlets on top and bottom sides and cooled down in the offtake line (13). The air heater and air cooler comprize a heat exchanger (14) having top surface expander ribs (15). The incoming fresh air is pressurized by blower or compressor (25) as against the offtake line (13) which is equipped with a condensate container (22). The compressed (25) air enters a three-way valve (23) whence air passes over three-way valves (15,17) off lines (28,29) into the feed and offtake lines respectively (12,13).
