The internal combustion engine with one cylinder has a pair of inlet valves (6), the mechanism for which comprises a camshaft (16) with a pair of pause sections for holding the inlet valves (6) in closed pause conditions. A first operating cam has a profile allowing the inlet valve to effect an opening-closing movement. Likewise, second and third cams perform in the same way, although the third cam has a greater lift than the other two. First (54) and second drive rocker levers are connected respectively to inlet valves. Three free rocker levers are in contact with the first, second and third operating cams. Three connection changeover devices connect or separate respectively the first drive rocker to and from the first free rocker, the second drive rocker to and from the second free rocker and the first and second drive rockers to and from the third free rocker.
