The method involves measuring and storing distances to following vehicles as well as to preceding vehicles. Distances are measured to an immediately following vehicle or to one or more other vehicles and a signal is transmitted into the vehicle interior in the event of certain changes in distance, e.g. for defined magnitudes of distance change. The method may be used only to signal a predetermined distance or change in distance. Preferably, the signal is an acoustic signal.
