A cathode ray tube glass screen (10), consists of a toughened glass with a high x-ray absorption coefficient. A rectangular glass screen (10), for a cathode ray tube, consists of a glass with an x-ray longitudinal absorption coefficient of -34 cm-1 at 0.6 Angstrom wavelength, has dimensions satisfying the relationship T/D2 = 0.07 to 0.09 (where T = average screen front thickness and D = maximum diagonal length of the screen front, both being in inches) and is toughened so that its front has a surface residual compressive stress of 5-25 MPa. An Independent claim is also included for a cathode ray tube having the above glass screen.
