A filler containing polymer dispersion (I) comprises water, organic and/or inorganic filler particles and synthetic organic polymer particles that are polymerized in the presence of at least one type of filler and whereby the ratio of filler particle size to polymer particle size is 1.1:1-20:1. Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the preparation of (I) by emulsion polymerization in an aqueous phase using a radically polymerizable monomer and a polymerization initiator whereby the aqueous phase contains dispersed filler particles having a particle size (d50) of 0.01-0.5 microns and a water soluble organic polymer having a molecular weight of greater than 600 and an HLB-value of greater than 15. (ii) an adhesive or surface coating containing the polymer dispersion (I).
