The tensioning system automatically regulates the tension of the drive chain, using at least one hydraulic tensioning cylinder (4), for adjusting the relative spacing of the drive and return wheels (1,2) at opposite ends of the chain loop (3). The regulation uses displacement and/or pressure sensors (14,15) associated with the tensioning cylinders, for determining the pressure variation for a defined piston/cylinder stroke. Pref. the sensor signals are used as the actual tension signal for comparison with the required tension signal, by the regulator, for maintaining a constant tension value.
