A plug for closing a tubular member opening at the outside of a slaughtered animal, is characterised in that said plug is adapted to be inserted into the gullet of a slaughtered animal from which the head has been removed; said plug has the general shape of a beaker comprising a bottom and a beaker wall such that the plug can be inserted into a gullet with its bottom to the front and can co-act with the gullet wall for closure; and said plug has at least two parts with different inner diameters, the inner surfaces of which parts mutually connect via a step.
