The data processing commences with decomposition (25) of a document into different zones under specified criteria. Data is then extracted (26) from each zone, gathering bits representing color information. The extracted bits are processed for each zone to determine whether the zone represents text or image. Text and image zones are then processed separately using the techniques most appropriate to each.
