PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new transition metal complex useful as a catalyst for oxygen-oxidative polymerization of a phenolic compound, and usable as a catalyst for the production of a poly-1,4-phenylene ether having no C-C bond structure, slight ortho-position branching and a high melting point. ;SOLUTION: This complex is represented by the formula [M is a complex central metal atom consisting of a transition metal atom; R1 is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon; R2 is hydrogen, a halogen or the like; X is a counteranion; (n) is the number of X decided by the atomic value of M] e.g. 1,4,7- tricyclohexyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane copper complex. This complex is obtained by e.g. reacting triazacyclononane trihydrochloride with cyclohexyl bromide to obtain 1,4,7-tricyclohexyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane monoperchlorate and the resultant compound is subjected to potassium hydroxide and, thereafter, reacted with cupric chloride dihydrate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
