PURPOSE: To connect optical fibers without individual differences by picking up the transmitted light images of the optical fibers to be connected, indicting the plural values calculated from the peak position of the luminance thereof and aligning centers in such a manner that these values coincide. ;CONSTITUTION: The end faces of the constant polarization optical fibers having cores and stress imparting parts in clads are disposed to face each other and are irradiated with light from an LED3 disposed alongside these fibers. The respective transmitted light images A, B are picked up by a television camera 4 consisting of a microscope 4a and a CCD camera 4b. An image processor calculates the peak positions of the first to third luminance picked up in correspondence to the positions of the cores 1b and stress imparting members 1c of the optical fibers 1 in accordance with the video output of the transmitted light image A from the CCD camera 4b and similarly determines the peak positions of the fourth to six luminance of the transmitted light images B. The signals corresponding to the luminance distribution of the transmitted light images A, B are superposed on the two values calculated from these positions and the superposed signals are indicated and the centers of the optical fibers are aligned by moving the optical fibers until the two values coincide.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
