PURPOSE: To obtain a solid mass, which can collect mercury and/or arsenic from gases, by incorporating a copper compound except a sulfide in a solid inorganic dispersant, calcining the product to convert the same into copper oxide, allowing the product therefrom to react with elementary sulfur, and heat-treating the same product in non-oxidation atmosphere. CONSTITUTION: At least one copper compound other than copper sulfide is incorporated in a support, i.e., a solid inorganic dispersant. The obtained product, when it is not copper oxide, is calcined and converted into copper oxide. After bringing the product into contact with elementary sulfur, a heat treatment is carried out under sweeping of non-oxidative atmospheric gas, at a temp. high enough and for a time long enough to form a sulphide of the metal present, thereby the solid mass to be utilized in the removing process of mercury and/or arsenic, which exerts a better time-wise stability, is prepared.
