PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the discharge of odorous gas out of an apparatus during pausing of the apparatus and to prevent the damage of a device due to moisture by condensing the steam retaining in the apparatus in a dryer for drying by bringing heated circulating steam into contact with matter to be dried such as sludge. ;SOLUTION: The condenser for a vapor contact dryer circulates the steam evaporated from matter to be dried from a drying chamber 20, reheats it by the steam heater 13 of a heat source system 10 and heats to dry the matter. A condenser 31 for condensing the steam generated from the residual matter to be dried by the heat inertia in a steam circulating system 21 at the time of pausing the drying is connected to the chamber 20. The condenser 31 has an upper gas storage chamber 34, a lower gas storage chamber 35 and a cooling heat transfer surface 37 for communicating both the chambers 35, 34. The chamber 34 of the condenser 31 is connected to the chamber 20 by a suction switching valve 30 for opening at the time of pausing the drying, and the chamber 35 is connected to the chamber 20 by an exhaust switching valve 33 for opening at the time of pausing the drying.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
