PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an agent for orienting liquid crystal, good in affinity for chiral nematic liquid crystal, manifesting adequate hydrophilicity and easily orienting the chiral nematic liquid crystal in the horizontal direction, by reacting a specific diamine compound with a tetracarboxylic acid dihydrate.;SOLUTION: This agent is composed of a polyimide obtained by reacting a diamine compound shown by the formula (R is an alkyl, alkanoyl or benzoyl) with a tetracarboxylic acid dihydrate, preferably 1,2,3,4- cyclobutanetetracarboxylic acid dihydrate. The diamine compound shown by the formula preferably has an I/O (inorganic/organic) ratio of 0.05 to 1.10. A color filter of chiral nematic liquid crystal can be formed by producing an oriented membrane on a transparent substrate using the above agent, and transferring a photosensitive resin layer containing a chiral nematic liquid-crystal compound to the membrane.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2001,JPO
