PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sentence proofreading device which improves the efficiency of proofreading work by preventing the erroneous correction of the word which is in a cooccurrence relation with a prescribed word when the prescribed word is changed to a near-synonym. SOLUTION: A sentence proofreading device is composed of a well known computer provided with a CPU, a ROM, and a RAM, an input device, a display device, etc. At the time of performing a sentence proofreading process, the device divides an inputted sentence into words by performing morphological analysis and converts an arbitrary original word into a near-synonym by displaying the near-synonym by referring to a near-synonym dictionary (S1). Then the device fetches the original word (S2) and another word in the sentence (S3) and retrieves another word which is in a cooccurrence relation with the original word by referring to a cooccurrence dictionary (S5). When cooccurrence data exist ('YES' in S6), the device retrieves the near- synonym of another word (S7). When the near-synonym exists ('YES' in S8), the device changes the other word to the near-synonym by displaying and selecting the near-synonym (S9).
