PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture especially excellent in resolution at edges by properly interpolating colors of a single CCD solid-state image pickup element. ;SOLUTION: A pixel range a2 consisting of 3×3 pixels including fundamental colors cyan C, magnet M, yellow Y and green G is selected around a target pixel (a pixel of cyan C22) and also pixel range a3 consisting of 5×5 pixels around the target pixel is selected. Then the color component corresponding to the target pixel is interpolated by using other color components M12, M32, Y21, Y23, G11, G13, G31, G33 than the color component C22 of the target pixel in existence in the 3×3 pixel range. Concretely, a change in the color of the color component C22 corresponding to the target pixel is checked within the 5×5 pixel range.
