A standby cycle for a mobile station can ideally vary depending on one or more conditions regarding the operation of the mobile station. Based on one or more of these conditions, a variable wake-up parameter is determined and used to set the times when the mobile station automatically leaves a lower energy mode and enters a higher energy mode to hear radiolocation. The mobile station variable wake-up parameter is provided for a radio access network to one or more core networks to allow coordination of communications and services with the mobile station.
