Opposing carcass sections (4, 5) separated from each other in the belly region of the carcass (1) are engaged with and movable by grabs. A device for positioning large animal carcasses hung from their rear legs (2) and divided in their length direction into two carcass sections completely separated in the belly region, comprises at least two grabs for engaging with the two opposing carcass sections, so that the relative positions of these two sections can be varied using the grabs. An Independent claim is also included for a positioning method using this device.
