A heavy duty article carrier for packagingcans disposed horizontally includes bottom (1), top(18, 19), side (6, 12) and end (8, 10, 14, 16) walls.A composite top wall (18, 19) includes a pair ofhand hole apertures. A score line (55) is formed ineach side wall near the top edge thereof, and theends of these side score lines are connected with aweakened severance line (56, 57) which adjoins adiagonal score line (31, 33) formed at each cornerof the carrier top wall. In addition, a score line (60)is formed in each end wall near the top thereof,and each end of these score lines is interconnectedwith the adjacent end edge of the top wall and withthe adjacent end of an adjacent diagonal weakenedseverance line (31, 33) formed in the top wall.
