The warp knitter has a spreader (9) to grip both edges of the fabric (5), between the knitting station (2) and the fabric take-off (6). The spreader system has powered wheels (11,12), with needles (14) around the circumference. The drive axes are parallel to the working width of the warp knitter (1), and the wheel axes run at an angle. Each spreader (9) is fitted with 2-4 wheels (11-13). The angular pitch of at least one wheel (11-13) is adjustable in relation to the direction (15) of fabric movement. A carrier body has a drilling to accommodate a drive shaft, and at least one angled pocket to hold a wheel. The drive shaft has axial grooves, to be engaged by radial inner pins at the wheels. The wheels project from their angled pockets over a peripheral angle of at least 90 deg . Rotation of the carrier body alters the effective lateral offset of the needles around the wheels.
