The door edge protector has protective element(1) with a cavity(5) which can be internally pressurized so that the element is deformable while gripping around the edge(20) of the door. The cavity communicates with a cylinder or bellows pump unit which operates when the door moves. The protective element and pump unit form a gastight system. For returning the protective element to the initial position before deformation the cavity is charged with an evacuating pressure.
