A coating powder based on heat-cured resins and hardeners and suitable for coating plastics, wood or MDF is modified with 0.5-30 wt.% thermoplastic resin powder(s) with a melt viscosity of 150-1000 Pa.s at 160 deg C. Coating powder containing in weight percent (wt.%): (A) 40-85 wt.% heat-cured coating powder resin(s) with a melt viscosity of 100-3000 mPa.s at 150 deg C plus suitable hardener(s); (B) 0.5-30 wt.% thermoplastic resin powder(s) with a melt viscosity of 150-1000 Pa.s at 160 deg C; (C) 10-55 wt.% powdered inorganic filler; and (D) 0.5-10 wt.% conventional additives and/or pigments. An Independent claim is also included for a process for coating substrates with one or more layers of paint, by applying the coating powder described above, partly or completely hardening the coating by heating, applying more layer(s) of coating powder or liquid paint and then hardening the multilayer coating.
