The hand-operated steering component comprises a knob(14) which can be alternatively gripped either just by the fingers or by the ball of the thumb and a finger. The knob is mounted to rotate around a vertical axis at a distance from it, and has a travel or angle transmitter to produce a set value for the truck's assisted steering. A stationary contact face(12) for the ball of the thumb is provided in front of the knob when viewed in the direction of view of the operator.
