Recovery of ground samples e.g. when examining abandoned polluted areas, employs pneumatic hammer drill with detachable pointed- and annular-coring tips

With the sharp, closed tip (23) of the extraction unit installed, a bore is sunk at the point of investigation. The extraction unit is returned to the surface. A ground sample is recovered with an annular cutting tip (not shown) installed in place of the sharp closed tip, again returning the extraction unit to the surface. A ground sample is removed from the front end (4), once the cutting tip has been separated. The extracted sample is transferred from its holder, into a sample tube. An Independent claim is included for the extraction unit used to carry out the method.
