The machine has a workpiece holder with at least one beam generating head with a device for directing a beam at the workpiece and a positioning device for directed setting of a relative position of and relative motion between the workpiece and head. The positioning device has two units determining linear and non-linear displacement paths under the control of a control unit to determine the relative motion by superimposing the units' movements. The machine has a workpiece holder (2) with at least one beam generating head (6) with a device (8) for directing a beam (7) at the workpiece and a positioning device (9) for directed setting of a relative position of and relative motion between the workpiece and beam generating head. The positioning device has two positioning units (11,15) determining linear and non-linear displacement paths under the control of a control unit to determine the relative motion by superimposing the displacement movements of the two units.
