Use of 3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid and/or stereoisomers as antioxidants and/or radical scavengers in protecting mammalian skin, cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations, foodstuffs, lacquers and polymers

Use is claimed of 2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-2-hydroxyacetic acid (ie 3,4-dihydroxymandelic acid) and/or its stereoisomers (I) in protecting the following substrates against damaging (photo)oxidation processes: (1) mammalian skins; (2) cosmetic or pharmaceutical preparations; (3) foodstuffs; (4) lacquers; and (5) polymers. Independent claims also included for: (1) the use of cosmetic or dermatological preparations containing 0.001-1 wt.% of (I) in protecting mammalian skin against damaging oxidation processes; and (2) the use of (I) in combination with further antioxidants or radical scavengers in protecting mammalian skin against damaging oxidation processes.
