The device has a damping function and a conversion mechanism with a cam element on a drive shaft, a pair of cam grooves in the cam element and drive pins on claw elements. A damping arrangement between the drive shaft and cam element absorbs a shock on the drive shaft when the cam element stops at the end of an oscillation motion. The device has a damping function and a pair of claw elements (2) for gripping a workpiece that can be opened and closed, an electric motor (3) with a rotary drive shaft (3a) and a conversion mechanism (5) for converting reciprocal rotary motion of the drive shaft into opening and closing motion of the claw elements. The conversion mechanism has a cam element (12) on the drive shaft, a pair of cam grooves (15) in the cam element and drive pins on the claw elements. A damping arrangement (7) between the drive shaft and cam element absorbs a shock on the drive shaft when the cam element stops at the end of an oscillation motion.
